Fosamax users reported that the bisphosphonate Fosamax has the tendency to cause osteonecrosis of the jaw. The disease process is caused by an insufficient supply of nutrient-rich blood supply leading to a necrotic bone or deteriorating bone structure. A study was conducted to prove or refute the alleged claims about Fosamax’s relation with osteonecrosis of the jaw occurrences which was published as an article in a Canadian magazine called The Journal of Rheumatology.
Researchers conducting the study found that between the year 2004 and 2006, there were 32 cases of osteonecrosis of the jaw in patients using the bisphosphonate drug. Bisphosphonate drug was used by the involved 32 patients during the time they had ONJ. The report also showed that most of the affected cases took the said drug intravenously while 13 of them by mouth. It was further concluded that intravenous route of bisphosphonate administration enables stronger effect to the patient compared with oral administration. The result of the study conducted proves that intravenous bisphosphonates are more potent than those taken by mouth. This finding does not lead us to the range of ONJ possibility of Fosamax users.
